FAQs
What are nipple shields and when should I use them?
Nipple shields are thin, flexible silicone covers that fit over your nipple and areola during breastfeeding. They're designed to help in specific situations such as when your baby is struggling to latch (especially with flat or inverted nipples), when you have sore or cracked nipples that need protection whilst healing, or when transitioning a premature baby to breastfeeding. Nipple shields should be used as a temporary solution under the guidance of a lactation consultant or healthcare professional.
How do I use nipple shields correctly?
First, ensure the shield is clean and sterilised. Express a few drops of breastmilk onto the inside of the shield to help it adhere to your breast and encourage your baby to latch. Stretch the brim of the shield and place it centrally over your nipple, ensuring there's a small gap between your nipple tip and the end of the shield. Your baby should latch onto both the shield and your breast tissue, not just the tip. Always seek guidance from a lactation consultant for proper fitting and technique.
What size nipple shield do I need?
Getting the right size is crucial for effective feeding and your comfort. New Beginnings offers two sizes: Size S (suitable for nipples 10mm to 16mm) and Size L (suitable for nipples 16mm to 20mm in diameter). If the shield is too small, your nipple will touch the end, causing discomfort and potentially reducing milk flow. If it's too large, your baby won't be able to latch properly. A lactation consultant can help you determine the correct size and ensure proper fit.
Can nipple shields affect my milk supply or baby's feeding?
Whilst modern ultra-thin silicone nipple shields are much better than older versions, they can potentially reduce the stimulation your breast receives, which may impact milk supply if used long-term. It's important to monitor your baby's weight gain, wet nappies, and feeding effectiveness whilst using shields. Most mums only need nipple shields temporarily (anywhere from a few days to several weeks) whilst working through latch issues or allowing nipples to heal.
How do I wean my baby off nipple shields?
Weaning should be done gradually with support from a lactation consultant. Try removing the shield partway through a feed once your baby is settled and feeding well, then continue without it. Offer the breast without the shield when your baby is sleepy or just waking, as they may be more willing to try. Have plenty of skin-to-skin contact to encourage natural latching instincts. Be patient and don't force it. For more breastfeeding support and tips, check out the Breast Care Essentials for New Mums guide.
