What are Nursing Pads for & how to use them
If you’re a first time mum, we can guarantee you have questions about every pregnancy, maternity and baby product there is. Today we want to start at the beginning and make it easy for you - Welcome to nursing pads 101!
So what is a Nursing Pad?
A nursing or breast pad is a small pad that is placed between your breast and bra to absorb leaking milk from your breasts. Nursing pads are used to avoid any milk seeping onto your clothes and creating discomfort (as well as saving you multiple loads of extra laundry)! They are available in many different types, styles, shapes and sizes to suit you best.
Why do I need Nursing Pads?
Throughout your pregnancy you may find your breasts will naturally start to produce milk to get ready for bub’s arrival. Since this milk has nowhere to go yet, you may find your breast will start to leak milk. If you plan to breastfeed, you may also need to stock up on some nursing pads as leaking breasts can occur in between feeds. It is extremely common to leak throughout the day and night as your body regulates, you may even find your breasts will leak more leading up to your normal feeding times. Having some nursing pads on hand will simply help you feel more comfortable, dry and confident throughout your pregnancy and breastfeeding journey.
When should I buy Nursing Pads?
Every new mum’s journey is different, so when you need to purchase your nursing pads may be different from your mum’s, sister’s or best friend’s experience. We recommend having a couple of boxes on hand throughout Trimester 3 as you inch closer to giving birth, so that if your breasts start to leak you’re ready to catch any leaks.
What type of Nursing Pad should I get?
I know you’re sick of hearing this by now, but this is completely up to you! There are so many options for nursing pads, and some mums like to try a couple different styles before they find what works best for you. We want to make it a little easier for you though, so here’s everything you need to know about our nursing pad options:

So what should I look for in a Nursing/Breast pad?

Is it comfortable? Ensuring you feel confident, dry and comfortable at all times of the day or night when you’re wearing a breast pad is essential. The longer you feel dry and secure, the happier you will feel!

Absorbency: Whether you want to go for a disposable or washable breast pad, make sure you’re choosing a pad that is absorbent enough for your needs. This will vary for your personal needs, but feeling dry is the most important factor.

Coverage: Try out a couple of different types to see what style works best for you. Ensuring you find the right fit, contour and coverage will guarantee you are feeling comfortable and dry at all times.
- Price! Nursing pads are like nappies...you’re going to need a lot of them! Most mothers will use between 4-9 pairs per day for anywhere between 6-18months (that’s a lot of pads!) Making sure you find an option which is sustainable for your budget will ensure you’re always feeling comfortable, dry and supported.
